* Trust their instincts – Children are attracted to instrument that reflect their personality. For instance, quiet kids may choose the flute over the trumpet.
* Be sure they’re physically ready – Kids can’t handle most instruments which can be heavy or require facial muscle control or finger strength until fifth grade. Start younger ones on piano or child-size violin.
* Don’t let their friends influence them – Kids who select an instrument based on peer pressure are more likely to abandon plying earlier.
* Be wary of the school music teacher’s advice – He or she may try to sway your kids interest based on the bands needs. Insist your child be permitted to pursue the instrument of their choice.
